Does it activate automatically when reversing?
Yes. The system activates when reverse gear is selected and performs a self-check at ignition.
SCC’s Side Proximity Sensor System enhances driver awareness during low-speed manoeuvres by providing wide-angle detection along either side of the vehicle. Using asymmetric ultrasonic sensing, it detects pedestrians, cyclists, vehicles and static obstacles within side blind spot areas where the risk of contact is highest.
Designed for use with SCC’s X-Wire technology, the system communicates over the vehicle’s existing OEM wiring, simplifying installation and supporting reliable operation across tractor–trailer combinations, rigid vehicles and long-bodied trailers where durability and connectivity are essential.
SCC’s Side Proximity Sensor System provides drivers with reliable hazard awareness during low-speed manoeuvres, particularly in urban, depot and site environments where vulnerable road users may travel close alongside the vehicle. Side blind spots are a frequent cause of avoidable incidents, especially when turning, pulling away or changing lanes at low speed.
The system’s asymmetric ultrasonic sensors continuously monitor the detection zone along the chosen side of the vehicle, providing clear, distance-based audible alerts when pedestrians, cyclists or obstacles enter the area. This supports earlier driver reaction and helps prevent contact that may otherwise go unnoticed.
When deployed using SCC’s X-Wire technology, the system sends signals over the vehicle’s existing OEM wiring, eliminating the need for additional trailer looms and reducing common failure points associated with traditional side detection installations. The system activates automatically with vehicle ignition and can be configured to integrate with SCC’s optional Smart GPS Speed Control, allowing speed-based activation to minimise unnecessary alerts during higher-speed travel.
With automatic operation, built-in diagnostics and a robust design suitable for heavy fleet use, the Side Proximity Sensor System delivers consistent, practical protection across a wide range of vehicle types.
SCC’s Side Proximity Sensor System is ideal for fleets operating vehicles in environments where vulnerable road users or obstacles may be present close alongside the vehicle.
Typical applications include:
SCC’s Side Proximity Sensor System supports safer low-speed manoeuvring as part of wider Work-Related Road Risk (WRRR) management, Mission Zero, and a range of site-access safety policies used across construction, utilities, municipal and logistics operations.
Whilst side proximity sensors are not part of the Direct Vision Standard (DVS) Progressive Safe System and do not meet FORS vision-aid requirements on their own, they remain a valuable supplementary measure when used alongside compliant camera and alert systems.
When combined with SCC’s side cameras, monitors and driver-warning solutions, the system contributes to a more complete safety setup for fleets operating in challenging or high-risk environments.
Side blind spots are one of the most significant risks for large vehicles, particularly in congested urban areas where cyclists, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users may travel close alongside the vehicle. Mirrors alone can leave critical gaps in visibility, making it difficult for drivers to detect hazards during low-speed manoeuvres, lane changes or when pulling away from junctions.
SCC’s Side Proximity Sensor System addresses these challenges by providing wide-angle ultrasonic detection along the vehicle’s side, helping drivers identify hazards sooner and maintain better spatial awareness. Clear, distance-based audio alerts support early reaction and smoother control, reducing the likelihood of avoidable side-impact incidents.
When used with SCC’s X-Wire technology, the system also eliminates the complexity of installing and maintaining trailer-mounted wiring, providing reliable, automatic activation across varying tractor–trailer combinations and helping fleets reduce downtime and operational cost.
