What Is A Vehicle Sensor System?

They are capable of detecting objects over much greater distances than ultrasonic sensors, with many systems operating across tens or even hundreds of metres depending on the application. Some advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) can detect objects at significantly longer distances, depending on the application.

Radar sensors are commonly used in applications such as:

What Are Vehicle Sensor Systems Used For?

Do Vehicle Sensor Systems Replace Cameras?

No.

Vehicle sensor systems and camera systems perform different functions, and in many applications they work best when used together.

A camera gives the driver a visual view of the area around the vehicle, allowing them to assess the situation for themselves.

A sensor system, on the other hand, actively detects nearby hazards and alerts the driver when an object enters a predefined detection zone. This means the driver receives a warning even if they are not looking at the camera monitor at that precise moment.

For many commercial vehicles, combining cameras and sensors provides greater overall awareness than using either technology in isolation, with each system complementing the strengths of the other.

Choosing The Right Vehicle Sensor System

When selecting a vehicle sensor system, fleets should consider:
