Client Profile

  • Name: Stan Robinson Ltd
  • Industry: Road Haulage / Logistics
  • Fleet: Nationwide fleet of articulated and rigid trucks
  • Products Installed: SCC DVS PSS Upgrade Pack
  • Project Background

    Established in 1970, Stan Robinson Ltd is a family-owned logistics company based in Stafford.  The company operates a modern fleet, maintaining high standards of vehicle safety and compliance across its depots.  Many of their trucks operate in London, where safety around pedestrians and cyclists is critical.

    Previously, the fleet was compliant with Transport for London’s (TfL) Direct Vision Standard (DVS), which rates vehicles on driver visibility from zero to five stars.  However, TfL announced an upgrade, the Progressive Safety System (PSS), requiring vehicles rated below three stars to install additional safety equipment (including cameras, sensors, audible warnings, and signage) to better protect vulnerable road users.

    Stan Robinson recognised the need to act early to prepare their fleet for the upcoming PSS deadline and maintain full operational access to London.

    The Challenge

    Operating a fleet in busy urban environments presented both safety and operational challenges.  The company needed a practical, reliable system that could be installed by their own team and deployed consistently across the fleet without disrupting scheduled work.

    The company’s key requirements were:

    • Enhance rear and nearside visibility for drivers in dense urban environments;
    • Ensure compliance with the upcoming TfL PSS regulations;
    • Integrate quickly into the fleet with minimal downtime;
    • Allow installation by their own team;
    • Provide a reliable, consistent supply to fit their scheduled works timetable;
    • Deliver dependable performance in all conditions.

    The SCC Solution

    Stan Robinson selected SCC’s PSS Camera System, a proven solution designed to meet the requirements of TfL’s Progressive Safety System, including:

    • Blind Spot Information System (BSIS): AI camera covering the nearside warns drivers of pedestrians or cyclists entering critical zones.
    • Moving Off Information System (MOIS): Forward facing AI camera alerts drivers when a vulnerable road user is in front of the vehicle.
    • On-Site Training & Configuration: Technicians provide hands-on training to show installers how to fit and configure the systems correctly.
    • DVS Documentation Support: SCC supplied the necessary documentation for the fleet to apply for the DVS permit.
    • Easy Integration & Reliability: Installation was straightforward and fast, minimising vehicle downtime and ensuring full functionality across the fleet.

    The system requires no additional driver intervention, reducing the risk of human error, and allows the fleet to operate confidently in compliance with TfL’s updated safety requirements.

    The Result

    Following installation, Stan Robinson observed immediate benefits:

    • Enhanced Driver Awareness: Cameras and sensors give drivers confidence when manoeuvring in London and other urban areas.
    • Regulatory Compliance: Vehicles now meet TfL PSS requirements, protecting fleet access to London.
    • Positive Feedback: Drivers appreciate the reliability and effectiveness of the system.
    • Operational Efficiency: Reduced risk of low-speed collisions and near-misses, decreasing repair costs and downtime.

    Dave Bolton, Diagnostics Technician, summarised the experience:

    We’re now using the new PSS camera system with very good results. Great backup if required, and the drivers like them as well — they’ve even mentioned that the BSIS camera is useful when manoeuvring on the motorway, which adds an extra layer of safety.  Really good product and at a good price.”
