Client Profile

  • Name: Paddywagon Tours
  • Industry: Passenger Transport / Tourism
  • Fleet: Nationwide tour coach operation
  • Products Installed: SCC Rear Proximity Sensor System & SCC Front Corner Proximity Sensor System
  • Project Background

Paddywagon Tours is one of Ireland’s most recognisable and busiest tour operators, carrying thousands of passengers annually across its fleet of coaches.  Operating in bustling city centres, rural tourist attractions, and tight depot spaces, their drivers face daily challenges from pedestrians, cyclists, and limited manoeuvring room.

The company recognised that even the most skilled and experienced drivers can face dangerous “blind spots” — particularly when reversing or negotiating tight corners.  They set out to find a reliable, low-maintenance solution to enhance safety and reduce accident risk.

    The Challenge

Whilst incidents involving pedestrians and cyclists often make headlines in major cities such as London, the risk is present anywhere large passenger vehicles share the road.

Paddywagon Tours required a system that would:

    • Provide clear hazard alerts in real time
    • Operate reliably in all weather conditions
    • Integrate seamlessly into their fleet without long installation times
    • Reduce low-speed collisions and costly repairs

    The SCC Solution

After reviewing available options, Paddywagon Tours selected SCC’s Rear Proximity Sensor System and Front Corner Proximity Sensor System.

Both systems use SCC’s patented X-Wire Technology, transmitting data through the vehicle’s existing wiring.  This removes the need for transmitters or additional complex wiring runs, reducing installation time, keeping vehicle off-road (VOR) time to a minimum, and lowering fitting costs.

    Rear Protection System

    • Automatically activated when reverse gear is selected.
    • ECU mounted at the rear of the vehicle with high-quality sensors for precise detection.
    • Audible and visual warnings increase in urgency as objects are approached, with a final constant tone when the stop distance is reached.

    Front Corner Protection System

    • Designed for low-speed manoeuvring in urban environments.
    • Detects pedestrians, cyclists, or objects at a selectable distance (60cm or 90cm).
    • Gives a constant tone within 30cm for maximum safety.

    Technical Advantages

    • Resistant to dirt, ice, and stray electronic interference.
    • Fully type approved, EMC approved, and CANbus compatible.
    • Proven reliability from -40°C to +80°C.

    The Result

Positive driver feedback followed immediately after installation.  Drivers valued the systems particularly when reversing in confined areas or navigating crowded tourist locations.

One driver recalled a moment when the technology may have saved a life:

“A teenager cycled out in front of my coach as I was making a left turn. Without the warning tone, I wouldn’t have stopped in time. It could have been a tragedy — the beeper absolutely saved that young person’s life.”

By adopting SCC’s proximity sensor systems, Paddywagon Tours has:

    • Increased safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and passengers
    • Reduced the likelihood of costly vehicle damage
    • Improved driver confidence in challenging manoeuvres
    • Achieved installation with minimal disruption to operations
