Client Profile
Project Background
LA Dale Ltd operates agricultural trailers as part of day-to-day farming activity, regularly manoeuvring larger equipment in yards, gateways and working areas where space can be limited and visibility restricted.
The system was initially installed following a prize draw at Ripon Farm Services, giving the business the opportunity to trial X-Wire Technology in a real working environment.
As with many agricultural setups, rear visibility when operating trailers is often limited, particularly when working with larger units. This can make reversing and positioning more difficult, with operators relying on mirrors and judgement alone.
Over time, this creates both safety concerns and an increased risk of minor impacts and damage, particularly in busy or confined working environments.
Traditional camera systems can help address visibility issues, but in many cases they introduce additional complexity. Systems that rely on dedicated wiring or require pairing and reconnection when switching between tractors and trailers can quickly become impractical in day-to-day use.
In a working agricultural environment, where trailers are regularly changed and equipment needs to operate reliably without additional setup, this can limit how effectively such systems are used in practice.
The business was looking for a practical solution that would provide clear rear visibility, without adding complexity to the tractor-trailer setup or introducing additional wiring between vehicles.
The Challenge
Operating larger agricultural trailers presented a number of challenges:
- Limited rear visibility, particularly on larger trailers
- Reliance on judgement when reversing or manoeuvring
- Increased risk of minor knocks and damage over time
- The need for a simple system that works consistently without additional setup
- Avoiding complex or fragile wiring between tractor and trailer
The SCC Solution
SCC supplied a rear camera system integrated using X-Wire Technology, allowing the signal to be carried through the existing electrical connections between the tractor and trailer.
This removes the need for additional cabling between vehicles and allows the camera system to operate automatically whenever the trailer is connected.
Because the system uses the existing electrical connections, there is no need for pairing, reconfiguration, or additional connections when switching between tractors and trailers. The system simply works as soon as the trailer is connected.
The result is a straightforward, reliable setup that fits naturally into day-to-day operation, without requiring driver intervention or additional steps when changing trailers.
The Result
The benefits were immediate in day-to-day use.
Rear visibility became clear and consistent, particularly when operating the larger trailer where blind spots are most significant. This removed the need to rely on judgement alone, making reversing and positioning far more controlled. The ability for the system to work automatically whenever the trailer was connected also ensured it operated consistently every time it was needed.
Additionally, the system delivered a clear safety benefit, allowing the operator to instantly identify people or obstacles behind the trailer. Over time, this is expected to reduce the likelihood of minor impacts and damage, particularly during regular manoeuvring in tighter working areas.
Andrew Dale commented:
“On the bigger trailers it’s made a huge difference straight away. Before, you’re relying on mirrors and a bit of judgement, and you’re never completely sure what’s behind you. Now you can see it instantly, which takes all that guesswork out of it.
From a safety point of view that’s a big step forward. If there’s someone or something behind you, you know straight away rather than hoping you’ve judged it right. As an employer, that gives me real peace of mind when we’ve got multiple people operating the machinery and contractors working on the farm.
I wouldn’t want to be reversing without it now. Having seen the difference it makes, we’ll definitely be looking at fitting X-Wire to other trailers and larger implements where visibility is restricted.”
