How TP Niven Improved Fleet Safety Through a Collaborative Approach with SCC

    TP Niven was not looking for a single off-the-shelf product. Instead, the company wanted a partner that would take the time to understand its operation, identify the challenges drivers faced and recommend practical solutions based on how the fleet actually worked.

    Rather than beginning with products, SCC started by assessing the vehicles, operating environment and day-to-day driver experience. This collaborative approach identified three key areas where practical improvements could be made.

    The Challenge

    Working alongside TP Niven, SCC identified three distinct operational challenges that required different approaches:

    Rear Visibility

    Articulated tankers provide limited rearward visibility, with drivers regularly manoeuvring in confined customer sites where safe reversing can be particularly challenging.

    Tail Swing

    Like many tanker operators, TP Niven’s vehicles regularly travel through narrow rural roads and town centres where articulated vehicle tail swing presents an ongoing risk during low-speed manoeuvres.

    Dash Camera Reliability

    Drivers were becoming frustrated with repeated warning alerts from existing dash cameras as memory cards reached capacity. In some cases, the constant warnings resulted in systems being disabled altogether.

    The SCC Solution

    SCC worked alongside TP Niven to evaluate each challenge individually, recommending different solutions only where they genuinely added value.

    For rear visibility, two vehicles were fitted with SCC’s patented X-Wire rear camera system. By transmitting the camera signal through the vehicle’s existing wiring, installation remained straightforward whilst avoiding unnecessary additional cabling. The trial also demonstrated the wider operational benefits of SCC’s X-Wire technology, allowing reliable rear camera connectivity across interchangeable tractor and trailer combinations without the complexity of additional wiring.

    To address concerns around tail swing, SCC trialled its Tail Swing System on two vehicles. Whilst the technology performed exactly as designed, regular roadside hedges and vegetation generated unnecessary alerts in TP Niven’s operating environment. Rather than recommending a wider rollout, SCC and TP Niven jointly agreed the system was not the right solution for this particular application.

    Finally, instead of replacing TP Niven’s existing dash camera systems, SCC upgraded the equipment by designing and manufacturing bespoke lockable housings to prevent tampering and increasing storage capacity to 128GB SD cards. This extended recording time significantly whilst protecting the customer’s existing investment.

    The Result

    The collaborative approach allowed TP Niven to make informed decisions based on practical fleet experience rather than assumptions.

    Following positive driver feedback, SCC’s X-Wire rear camera system has continued to be installed across additional vehicles, with wider fleet rollout planned. The Tail Swing System trial proved equally valuable because it confirmed the system was not the most appropriate solution for TP Niven’s operating environment, whilst the upgraded dash camera systems reduced driver frustration and have since been implemented across the fleet.
