Project Background
HPH Milton Keynes is a road haulage business operating as part of HPH Group, a national transport and logistics provider offering UK-wide haulage, distribution and dedicated transport services.
The Milton Keynes operation supports long-distance road freight movements using a mixed fleet of tractor units, delivering transport services across the UK.
The relationship with SCC began when HPH Milton Keynes needed to bring its fleet into compliance with London’s Direct Vision Standard. Rather than treating compliance as a one-off project, the business continued to develop its vehicle safety systems as both its operational needs and London’s requirements evolved.
The Challenge
HPH Milton Keynes initially required a consistent fleet-wide solution that would allow its vehicles to continue operating in London while meeting the original DVS requirements.
However, compliance systems alone did not provide the business with a record of incidents involving its vehicles. HPH Milton Keynes therefore wanted to build on the original installation by adding recording capability that could support incident reviews, establish what had happened and provide reliable evidence where accounts differed.
In addition, when the Progressive Safe System was introduced as the next stage of London’s Direct Vision Standard, the fleet needed to be upgraded again so its vehicles could continue meeting London’s latest safety requirements.
The SCC Solution
SCC supported HPH Milton Keynes through each stage of the fleet’s safety upgrades.
The initial project equipped the entire fleet with the safety technology needed to meet the original Direct Vision Standard.
HPH Milton Keynes subsequently chose to upgrade the fleet with MDVR recording systems. These systems record footage from the installed vehicle cameras, allowing incidents to be reviewed and providing an objective record of events on and around the vehicle.
When the Progressive Safe System requirements were introduced, SCC returned to upgrade the fleet once again. This allowed HPH Milton Keynes to meet the newer standard whilst retaining the wider operational benefits provided by its recording systems.
The Result
HPH Milton Keynes now operates a fleet equipped to meet the Progressive Safe System requirements, with vehicle-mounted MDVR systems providing additional recording capability.
The recording systems have proved their value on numerous occasions, providing clear and irrefutable evidence when incidents have occurred. This has enabled the business to establish the facts more quickly, support its drivers where appropriate and respond to disputed accounts using recorded footage rather than relying solely on individual recollections.
By developing its vehicle safety systems over several stages, HPH Milton Keynes has continued to meet London’s changing requirements whilst gaining operational benefits that extend well beyond compliance alone.
