Client Profile
Project Background
Founded in 1927, Fagan & Whalley has grown from a single-truck local delivery business into a prominent UK logistics operator with multiple depots. The company has long been synonymous with quality and reliability.
Rear trailer blindspots were identified as a high-risk area. Traditional rear camera systems caused operational downtime and proved impractical for artics coupling to different trailers. Fagan & Whalley needed a solution that would enhance driver awareness, reduce downtime, and maintain compliance with FORS and DVS standards.
Reflecting on their attempts to find a workable system, Adam Burgess explains:
“From the word go, traditional rear camera systems caused us nothing but problems, with vehicles spending days off the road due to the costly and time-consuming installation, running cables along the full length of the vehicle, and having to reconnect an extra suzie cable every time a tractor coupled up to a new trailer… We trialled several different products and companies but weren’t happy with any of the solutions we’d been offered.”
The Challenge
Previous systems presented several challenges:
- Costly and slow installation with vehicles off-road for as much as a day
- Complex cabling and extra suzie connections for each tractor-trailer pair
- Impractical for a nationwide fleet with interchangeable trailers
- Difficulty maintaining consistent compliance with FORS and DVS standards
Fagan & Whalley required a reliable, practical, and compliant system that could operate seamlessly across their fleet.
The SCC Solution
After exploring several options, Fagan & Whalley approached SCC Worldwide and were introduced to their X-Wire Technology, which directly addressed the issues they had experienced with previous rear camera systems. This innovative solution allows rear cameras to connect automatically through the vehicle’s existing wiring, eliminating extra cabling or suzie connections and making the system practical for a nationwide fleet with interchangeable trailers.
Further key benefits included:
- Installation dates tailored to the fleet’s operational schedule, minimising downtime
- Automatic connectivity between any tractor and trailer, removing the need for driver intervention
- Reliable, practical use of rear cameras across the fleet, improving safety and driver confidence
- Compliance with FORS and DVS safety standards
- Ongoing technical guidance and support from SCC
The Result
Fagan & Whalley have realised several measurable benefits since implementing SCC’s X-Wire Technology:
- Reduced downtime and faster installation — vehicles remain on the road longer
- Practical rear camera use — previously impractical systems now fully functional
- Enhanced fleet safety — improved awareness for drivers and other road users
- Operational efficiency — no additional manual trailer connections
- Compliance and confidence — systems aligned with FORS and DVS standards
Adam Burgess, Head of Fleet Engineering, summarises:
“Once I heard about X-Wire, I could immediately see the benefits it would bring to our fleet and pushed ahead with a trial. Since then, we haven’t looked back. Not only did this technology save us untold amounts of time, money and hassle due to faster installs, but it has made using rear cameras practical for the first time. Any of our tractors will now automatically connect up to any of our trailers… At the end of the day, these cameras are there to make our vehicles safer, so by removing driver input from the equation, it means safety cannot be compromised by human error. The support from SCC has been invaluable throughout this process.”
